How many subjects can I fail in college?
College is a completely new and different world from high school. It’s not just the environment that changes, but also the way the subjects are taught, the way you study, the way you’re treated by your teachers, and the academic rules. That’s why it’s normal to have doubts and difficulties understanding this new reality.
One of the most common questions freshmen — and even seniors — have is knowing how many subjects they can fail in college. After all, it happens that students have difficulty in some subjects. So, understanding the rules and possibilities when this happens is important for you to manage your academic life well.

How does college failure work?
Failure in college is not very different from failing in high school. After all, it occurs when a student does not achieve the grade needed to effectively complete a certain subject, that is, he or she has not learned enough to have it on his or her resume.
In most cases, subjects have some tests over time and the total average must be at least 60% for the student to fail. Grades below this value result in failure.
If a student fails a certain course in university, he has to take the course again. This means that instead of the whole semester as one would do in secondary school, you are just required to take the course you failed.
On the other hand, it isn’t as straightforward since a university course has its co-requisites which means in order to take the second course you need to take the first one. So it’s likely that if you fail a particular course, you will be off the main track of courses and will end up taking a longer time to graduate.
To illustrate better, let’s say that in your programmed you are registered for “Calculus I” and “Calculus II”. The first one is set for semester one and the latter is scheduled for semester two.
But, during the semester you were enrolled in “Calculus I” you had some issues in the course to the extent of scoring under 60% of the overall course assessment and hence you failed the subject. A few days later you enroll to take “Calculus II” but wait, something is off; that course is a prerequisite for “Calculus II”, so what’s next? So, when you don’t pass that course you have to repeat “Calculus I”.
How many subjects can a student fail?
There is usually no stipulated limit on the number of courses you can fail at a college; hence one can afford to fail a couple of subjects without having serious issues with the institution. What usually happens, though, is that consecutive failures can greatly impair the pace of your academic progress, freezing a number of courses over the semesters, thus prolonging your graduation.
Nevertheless, it should be borne in mind that many colleges put a cap on the number of credits that can be failed within a semester, 50 per cent being the norm in most cases. But what does this imply? It simply means that it is not possible for you to pass every single course while in college.
So, in any given semester, you will not be able to fail more than 50 per cent of the credits that you are registered for. To explain further, let’s suppose you intend to take 5 subjects, each with 4 credits, thus giving you a total of 20 credits in a semester. If your institution has this quota, you will have a maximum of 10 credits to fail. Thus only 2 subjects can be passed. In case there are 3 failures, then you can expect a message from the college, and if you do it again, then you can even be expelled from the college.
